The newly renovated 15,000 square foot Effingham Service Center, located at 711 Zitterour Road in Rincon, GA celebrated their Grand Re-Opening on Monday, June 23.
The building has been named the Robert H. Demere, Jr. United Way Effingham Service Center, in honor of the Demere Foundation's continued support to the works of the United Way. United Way is grateful for the leadership gift of Robert H. Demere, Jr, chairman of Colonial Oil, and for several other gifts that got the project under way.
Over the past three months the Service Center has received extensive upgrades to the heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, plumbing, and electrical systems. In addition to cosmetic improvements such as new carpeting and paint, the renovations have allowed them to meet the requirements set by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), so everyone who comes to the building will have access.
The project cost about $350,000. Effingham County Advisory Board is conducting an ongoing capital campaign to fund this renovation. The Demere Foundation donated $150,000.
United Way created the Effingham Service Center in 1990 to meet increasing health and human services needs in the Effingham county. The Service Center has been the hub of various local agencies which provide programs and services to Effingham, North Bryan and Westside Savannah residents.
Today, the Robert H. Demere, Jr. United Way Effingham Service Center houses seven on-site agencies, including the Coastal Children's Advocacy Center, Community Cardiovascular Council, LIFE, Inc., Parent and Child of Union Mission, Savannah Speech and Hearing Center, Senior Citizens, Inc. and the United Way’s Effingham satellite office.
