It was about 7:45 p.m. when I took another call in the queue for the WTOC-TV Day of Giving virtual telethon to benefit our COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund. We were set to stop taking calls by 8pm. The crew with the television station was packing up outside. I asked the caller if she would like to pay by credit card. She sounded a little concerned and said, “Don’t y’all take cash? I was home and saw this on TV. They said you had a bucket and were taking cash. I went to the ATM and I’m on Bay Street now.”
Well, wow. I didn’t care if it was $5, I was going to make sure she could give it. I told her I would walk outside to meet her and she should see the WTOC guys packing up. She didn’t want to be on TV she said. She just wanted to help. And she handed me $100 in cash. She said she knew she was blessed. She had food in her refrigerator and her bills were paid, but she knows what it’s like.
This. This was the spirit of our community I saw today.

WTOC’s Day of Giving virtual telethon raised $209,000 for United Way of the Coastal Empire’s COVID-19 Rapid Response Fund. Thanks to the generosity of more than 350 individuals and companies we will be able help many people bridge the extreme financial gaps they are facing and support United Way funded agencies experiencing a greater demand for their programs and services due to COVID-19.
