Regionally Tailored Services

The Coastal Empire region extends from Savannah to the farms of Liberty County, through the woods of Effingham County, across the marshland of Bryan County, and into the wetlands of Long County. Every person in our five-county area can receive qualifying assistance from their local United Way Service Center. Our goal is provide services tailored to each community’s unique needs.

Bryan County Housing Fund

Through a generous donation from a Bryan County resident, over $23,000 in funds were used to assist 22 households in Bryan County with housing needs.


Through the Community Fund

4,399 Bryan County residents were assisted by United Way of the Coastal Empire funded nonprofits in FY 2023.24. In addition, we supported over 320 residents by providing information, resources, and direct services at our Bryan County Service Centers. Below are some of the ways we made an impact in Bryan County.

Safety Net

  • $48,545 saved in prescription costs
  • 348 senior citizens received in-home support
  • 405 people without insurance or who were underinsured received essential services
  • 1,379 Bryan County residents received free or low-cost food
  • 73 counseling sessions provided to children and families impacted by child abuse

Upward Mobility

  • 294 young people received leadership training
  • 4,058 preschool through second-grade Bryan County Public School students received new, grade-level books to increase early childhood literacy as part of our Read United initiative.
  • 700 individuals screened for hearing or speech impairments
  • 135 complimentary tax returns completed

Through the Community Fund

The Community Fund aided 11,696 Effingham residents through grant funding for 43 agencies and programs.  In addition to the support the United Way provides to partner agencies, 207 residents were assisted through direct services and programs at the Effingham County Service Center.  Below are some of the ways we made an impact this past year.

Safety Net

  • $371,238 saved in prescription costs.
  • Provided transportation aid to 36 residents totaling $4,678.
  • Assisted 54 families with rental and utility assistance in their time of need, totaling $23,910.
  • Through the Churches United partnership, we worked with local faith-based organizations to provide an online additional $5,328 in assistance for rent, utilities, relocation, and rehousing of local families.

Upward Mobility

  • Completed 337 tax returns through the VITA program, re-investing a total of $326,240 back into the local economy.
  • Distributed 3,747 books to preschool through 2nd grade students to increase early childhood literacy through READ UNITED Day and the Summer Reading Program.
  • 62 differently abled children were provided therapeutic counseling to build confidence and life skills through equine therapy.

Through the Community Fund

The Community Fund provided over $130,000 in grants to agencies located in and providing services to the citizens of Liberty County. As a result of this funding, 31,799 Liberty County residents were assisted by United Way of the Coastal Empire funded agencies in 2023. In addition, 5,987 residents were supported by providing emergency resources and referrals at the Liberty Service Center. Below are some of the ways we made an impact this past year.

Safety Net

  • 36,096 meals provided to 282 students for evening or weekend food assistance
  • $16,000 in emergency assistance distributed to 98 people
  • $17,775 in Emergency Food and Shelter Program Grants provided to local nonprofits to support the homeless population

Military

  • 416 active duty soldiers and their families provided with emergency financial assistance
  • 171 people provided with commissary cards to assist with household food insecurities

Upward Mobility

  • $1,000 in transportation assistance distributed to 166 community members
  • 5,012 books provided to students to promote early childhood literacy through our Read United Program
  • 2,940 senior citizens received supportive services
  • 3,040 individuals received crisis and mental health counseling services
