A Historic Investment in Our Community

United Way of the Coastal Empire is thrilled to announce a significant new investment in Effingham County, creating an opportunity to make a lasting difference for individuals and families across the community. 

United Way cannot do this work alone, and we believe the greatest impact will come from working together. Community members, nonprofit organizations, businesses, local leaders, educators, employers, and other partners all have an important role to play in shaping what comes next. 

Our goal is to build on what is already working, address the challenges families face, and create greater opportunities for ALICE families to achieve stability, economic security, and upward mobility.

Help Shape What Comes Next

We are currently developing a plan for this investment that is data-driven and informed by the people who know Effingham County best: the community itself. 

We are examining community data and listening to residents, partners, and local leaders to better understand the opportunities and challenges facing families. This input will help us identify where this investment can have the greatest long-term impact. 

We are developing short-, medium-, and long-term priorities and will continue gathering community feedback as we refine those priorities.

Why ALICE?

Our focus is on supporting ALICE families, which are households that are Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed. 

ALICE families are working and earning income, but often do not earn enough to consistently afford the basics or build financial security. With 37% of households living below the ALICE threshold, there is a significant opportunity to strengthen economic mobility for families in Effingham County. 

By focusing on the conditions and opportunities that help ALICE families get ahead, we can work toward a community where more families can move from financial instability to stability, security, and opportunity.
